Things to keep in mind while taking care of a cancer patient

November 13, 2018

Cancer, the dreaded six letter word is one that makes us shake in our boots whenever we hear it. Cases of cancer being detected in the human body have become extremely common now and even people who we know are getting affected by it. People who are health conscious and extremely aware of what they should and should not eat or drink while taking tremendous care of their body are even diagnosed with the disease, leaving them and the people who know them shocked.

But what is this cancer?

Cancer is when abnormal cells divide in an uncontrolled way. Some cancers may eventually spread into other tissues. These abnormal tissues come together and form a growth which is called a tumour. Now the big difference between a tumour and cancer is that all tumours may not be cancerous. There are two major types of tumours: Benign and Malignant.

A Benign tumour is one that is not cancerous and is just a growth in the body which does not spread around and can be removed via a surgery, but can become serious if it is pressing against a particular nerve or artery. A Malignant tumour is one that is cancerous in nature and has to be treated carefully. The malignant tumour- treatment is a lengthy and painstaking ordeal, which can cause serious trouble both to the body physically and mentally as well as take a severe toll on the financial health of the family as well.

Cancer care starts with the diagnosis of the type and place of the cancerous tumour in the body. Then after following up with several doctors, they chalk up a plan on how to properly deal with it and what kind of approach to follow. Then the process of Chemo therapy and radiation starts in which they target the cancerous cells of the body and start destroying them. Chemo therapy is an extremely harsh ordeal which takes a heavy toll on the body and hence certain steps have to be taken to ensure the patient is looked after properly.

Here are some basic things that a cancer patient should do:

  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Eat healthy foods.
  • Get exercise and fresh air if your doctor allows.
  • Check with your doctor before taking any vitamins or supplements.
  • Learn more about your cancer and treatment.
  • Take out time to enjoy your hobbies.
  • Keep a positive outlook throughout.

Of course cancer treatment can be and very expensive and to help you with that, HDFC Life Cancer Care- Cancer Insurance Policy India helps you plan out the financial side of the treatment -Offering lump sum benefit on diagnosis of cancer that helps to protect your income and savings from expenses that aren't covered by your major medical coverage.
