Mrityunjay Tiwari witnessed a disturbing act during one of his trips to his ancestral village of Mastichak in Bihar's Kishanganj district.

He saw a father selling/peddling his daughter. This incident pushed Mrityunjay to start his journey to make a difference, or as he calls it, a 'shodh yatra.'

Since then, Mrityunjay embarked on a transformative mission to empower and help girls from poor sections. His encounter made him acutely aware that children need two basic aspects: education and health. Hence, he started the 'Football to Eyeball' program, which transcends from football fields and eye clinics.

Football to Eyeball

Through the program, he encouraged girls to play football, and two groups emerged—one playing professionally, the other for fun. Both groups, however, shared a common aspect. They are all given education and training in optometry and nursing. Today, more than 300 girls have become qualified optometrists, with 17 representing the national team in football.

Financial planning as the parallel narrative

Planning and executing such an initiative is difficult if you do not have your finances planned. Mrityunjay knew this and took the crucial step of ensuring his financial affairs were in order. It started with managing all his investments and availing insurance so that his family's well-being is taken care of.

Knowing his family would be financially secure, he laid the foundation for the 'Football to Eyeball' initiative.

Empowering Through Discipline

While empowering girls to rise above their situation is noble, it isn't easy. This can only be achieved through consistency and a disciplined approach. This is the principle he learned from financial planning.

Before he started investing, he understood the goals he wanted to meet. For instance, since his goal was to create a secure future for his family, he invested in a disciplined manner and also purchased a life insurance policy.

This aspect also helped Mrityunjay to help shape the lives of the girls enrolled in this program. He knew that being consistent with their education and training would open doors to careers in optometry, nursing, and professional football.

Darkness to Light

Financial goals can only be realised when planned and executed properly. The idea is to invest wisely while keeping your risk appetite in mind. This can be achieved through financial planning. Mritunjay first understood the goals he wanted to achieve and then started investing in various tools that could help him fulfil them.

He applied the same theory to his program. To date, the "Football to Eyeball" program has transformed the lives of 410 girls, with a vision to empower 1500 girls by 2026. He also founded the Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, which is working towards eliminating curable blindness & empowering rural girls.
