What are the documents needed to file ITR online?
Before you get into the details of the above mentioned steps, it is important that you keep the following documents handy to file your ITR online:
- PAN
- Bank statements
- Form 26AS, AIS
- Form 16
What are the steps to file your ITR online?
1. Step 1 - Visit the Income Tax e-filing website
Click on the link - https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ to visit the Government of India Income Tax e-filing website.
2. Step 2 – Register (1st time user)/login (repeat user) to ITR e-filing website
- Login to your account by entering your PAN or user ID
- Click on ‘Continue’ and tick on the security check box thereafter
- Enter the password and click on ‘Continue’
3. Step 3 - Select ‘File income Tax Return’
Under the e-file menu you will get an option ‘Income Tax Returns’ and within the same you will find another option ‘File Income Tax Return’. Once you click on the same you will be redirected to the Income Tax Return page.
4. Step 4 – Enter required details
At this stage you will be able to see your PAN is auto-filled and your need to choose the following
- Assessment year – This is the financial year after the one in which you have earned your income. Suppose you have earned your income in the financial year 2022-23 then the assessment year will be 2023-24.
- Type of filing – You can select either’ Original’ or ‘Revised Return’
5. Step 5 - Select mode of filing as ‘Online’
Click on ‘Continue’ then select the mode of filing as ‘Online’ and click on ‘Proceed
6. Step 6 – Choose the applicable status
Pick your preferred filing status from the options: Individual, HUF and Others.
7. Step 7 – Choose the appropriate ITR form
Type of ITR form – You can select either ITR 1 or ITR 4. These are the 2 forms you can file online.
- ITR 1 – If your select ITR 1 then you have to provide the following information –
- Personal information such as full name, PAN and Aadhar number, contact details and bank account details.
- Enter and verify your Gross total income from various sources and you also need to provide details of income that is exempt, if any.
- Tax paid by your from all sources but not limited to TDS, TCS, Advance tax and Self-Assessment Tax.
- Total Tax liability evaluated as per details provided previously. It means Tax payable on Total income is (Income – Deductions claimed – tax paid till date). If this is positive then you need to pay the same as tax and in case its negative then you can claim the same as your tax refund
- ITR 4- If your select ITR 4 then you have to provide the following information –
- Personal Information – Same as in the case of ITR 1.
- Gross total income - Same as in the case of ITR 1.
- Disclosures – here you need to provide financial particulars pertaining to your business, information of gross receipts reported for GST and income that is exempt.
- Total Deductions – This is the deduction that you have claimed already under the various sections of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
- Taxes Paid - Same as in the case of ITR 1
- Total tax liability - Same as in the case of ITR 1
8. Step 8 - Select the reason for filing ITR
At this stage, you need to select why you are filing an ITR.
- Choose the option applicable to your situation:
- Taxable income is more than the basic exemption limit
- It’s mandatory to file according to certain criteria
- Others
- Click on Continue
9. Step 9 – Submit bank account details and other information
- Add your bank account details
- If already submitted, ensure they are pre-validated
- A new page will appear with pre-filled details
- Review carefully the correctness of pre-filled information
10. Step 10 - Summary of tax computation
At this stage the screen will show you a summary of the tax calculation on the basis of the information you have provide. Here you will get to know whether you have to pay any tax or you are eligible to claim a tax refund.
Then you have to provide your place of residence to preview and submit your ITR.
11. Step 11 - e-verify your ITR
This is the most important step to e-verify the return. Failing this, filing returns will be nullified
- Choose the option to e-verify through various methods like Aadhaar OTP, Netbanking, Electronic Verification Code (EVC) etc
- You can also send a physical copy of ITR-V to CPC, Bengaluru for verification
12. Step 12 – Submit your ITR
This is the last step in the entire process of filing an ITR online. You need to now click on ‘Submit’ to complete the process, post which you will receive and acknowledgement from the Income Tax Department on the email ID your have provided.

You need to send the printed and signed document to CPC Bangalore within 120 days of the e-filing. There is also an option of E verification of Income tax return by generating aadhar otp, through net banking, through ATM etc.
How to check ITR status online?
Once you have filed your income tax returns and verified it, the status of your tax return is 'Verified'. After the processing is complete, the status becomes 'ITR Processed'.

You can click on the ITR status tab on the extreme left of the e-filing website.
You are then directed to a new page where you have to fill in your PAN number, ITR acknowledgement number and the captcha code.
