According to a report in Science Direct, titled, "Trends in Coronary Heart Disease Epidemiology in India", cardiovascular diseases, especially coronary heart disease (CHD), are epidemic in India. The Registrar General of India reported that CHD led to 17% of total deaths and 26% of adult deaths in 2001-2003, which increased to 23% of total and 32% of adult deaths in 2010-2013. The World Health Organization (WHO) and Global Burden of Disease Study also have highlighted increasing trends in years of life lost (YLLs) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from CHD in India. In India, studies have reported increasing CHD prevalence over the last 60 years, from 1% to 9%-10% in urban populations and <1% to 4%-6% in rural populations.

The rise of heart related problems has been on the rise in the country. Several reasons can be attributed to. Uneven lifestyle, bad work hours and improper eating habits etc. This and several other reasons have led to a higher demand for health insurances that take care of critical illnesses related to heart health.

Any heart disease calls for higher spends on hospitalisation, medicine and doctoral advises. If seen from the point of view of covering it with your already existing health insurance plan, it may seem impossible mostly. Having said that, several health insurance companies are now offering health insurance plans specific to heart diseases. All such plans come with twin cover benefits -- they not only cover health related cost in emergency but also provide an added term cover, in case of death, the benefits are given to the dependents.

All heart related health insurance plans are long term plans with policy term of 10/15/20 years. A single plan has a maximum of 75 lakhs of sum assured. Some insurance players also offer dual benefits plans that cover both heart related and cancer related ailments under a single plan.

Most heart related health insurance plans are generally reimbursement plans. This means they don't offer any cashless facility. A heart attack insurance plan will not usually have sub-limits and thus becomes a very useful plan for the policyholders. However, before making a sound choice, please compare online and choose wisely.

HDFCLife offers a Cardiac Care. A comprehensive plan aimed at providing financial protection in case you are diagnosed with a cardiac condition or are undergoing a procedure as covered under the policy. You can tailor make your Cardiac Care plan as per your needs with additional plan options.
