Our Handy Guide for Breast Cancer

Handy Guide for Breast Cancer
December 24, 2022

Breast cancer—or any cancer for that matter—can be scary and overwhelming. Are you confused about this type of cancer and have countless questions running through your mind? Read on as we weigh in on the most commonly asked questions and bring you some handy information about breast cancer.

The beginning

Breast cancer is a form of cancer that develops when cells in the breast start growing out of control. These cells tend to form a tumour that can often be felt as a lump or detected via x-ray. The tumour is malignant and develops into cancer if the cells grow into the surrounding tissues or spread to distant parts of the body.

What causes breast cancer?

One of the reasons for breast cancer is old age. Studies have showed that the risk increases as one gets older. Another cause is family history, but genetics may not always be responsible for breast cancer. Being obese and overweight also increases the risk. Also, if one has survived a battle with breast cancer, chances are that it may resurface again. Overconsumption of alcohol is a small factor, while smoking is a debated cause

The symptoms

While the causes may vary from person to person, there are some identifiable symptoms when it comes to breast cancer. A lump on the breast can be the most obvious sign of potential breast cancer, but sometimes, it can indicate a benign tumour, fibrosis or cyst. It is advisable to consult your doctor if you detect a lump on your breast. Pain in one or both the sides of your breast for a long time might also be a symptom. One must also look out for inverted nipples, fluid discharge from the nipples, thickening of the skin in the underarm or breast area, reddening of the breasts, and a rash around the nipple that doesn’t go away.

Men can get breast cancer too

Yes, you read it right. Breast cancer is often thought of as something that only affects women, but men can be diagnosed with breast cancer, too. In fact, a study revealed that in 2017, the number of cases of breast cancer amongst men is approximately 2,470. The cancer occurs in the small proportion of breast tissue that men have behind their nipples.

Male Breast Cancer

Getting diagnosed with breast cancer is an incredibly difficult burden to bear. The treatment can cost one a staggering amount of money, especially when one takes into account the costs of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, prescription drugs, and other medical care. Many people with breast cancer go deeply into debt, while others delay the life-saving treatment until they can arrange sufficient finance.

Having insurance beforehand can literally save lives when it comes to breast cancer diagnosis. If you’re diagnosed with breast cancer after opting for insurance, the proceeds can help you afford the treatment in a timely manner. HDFC Life’s Cancer Care plan covers all types of cancer. Policy holders are offered a lump sum benefit and the premium benefit is waived off if the cancer is detected at an early stage, after they’ve opted for the policy. One can also enjoy tax benefits on premium payments.
