Guide for heart attack insurance

Guide for heart attack insurance
November 15, 2018

Heart diseases today form one of the many plagues that haunt our society. Considered by some to be a lifestyle disease or rather a condition that can even prove fatal if left untreated, any form of heart disease poses a grave threat to human health and well-being. Particularly common is the incidence of myocardial infarction, commonly known as “heart attack”. Being the most important part of the cardiovascular system in our body, heart constantly requires oxygenated blood supply through the coronary arteries. When, due to certain reasons and degeneration, plaque forms in the arteries, this supply gets impaired and the result is failure of the heart muscles. This severely limits the blood pumping capacity of the heart muscles and the result is myocardial infarction or heart attack.

The diagnosis and the subsequent treatment of heart disorders is a costly affair. Although due to the outreach by the concerned agencies in the bygone decades, availability of treatment has vastly improved and many breakthroughs have been made, yet, the whole process of treatment is very costly. There have been cases when the patient’s family has had to put its entire future at stake for bearing the treatment and recovery costs. Although taking out a basic health insurance plan is one of the basic requirements for a general financial coverage, yet it simply does not suffice or even basically cover the heart related mishaps. Therefore, taking insurance plan becomes mandatory.

The scope of buying a general health insurance cover that can cover critical or pre-existing conditions like cardiac disorders is limited. With the exception of specialized insurance companies, generally insurers do not provide extra coverage benefits. Besides, the premium rates shoot up with the extra coverage provided by the insurer. However, with the changing dynamics of the insurance market, many customized and critical illness-specific plans are available in the market today. The best option is to choose a heart-specific plan in addition to a general health cover, as this allows for targeted benefit coverage in case of any related occurrence. The benefits of heart-specific plans are numerous.

These plans offer lump sum benefit at the time of diagnosis. The occurrence of a heart attack severely impacts the general activities of the patient, confining them to beds and restricting any economically productive functioning. This not just puts a heavy financial burden on the patients and their families, but also forces lifestyle changes and added costs after recovery, as the recuperation and resting times are long and extensive. A lump sum benefit is such times ensures that the financial resources are cushioned from the risks and the coverage for the entire period of treatment, including hospitalization, surgery (if required) and post-surgical recuperation. This covers all the extra expenses for medication, consultation etc. and allows your primary savings to remain intact.

HDFC Life offers HDFC Life Cardiac Care – an extensively beneficial heart-specific plan that aims at providing financial protection in case of diagnosis of a heart-related disorder. This plan ensures that you receive total coverage in case of any heart related condition and offers lump sum benefits irrespective of the actual costs incurred for diagnosis or related procedures.
