Implementation of GST became a very basic changeover in indirect taxation mechanism in India and was done, keeping in mind One Nation One Tax motto. Under its purview, the erstwhile CBEC (Central Board of Excise and Customs) was replaced with CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs). Under the structure of GST, three forms of taxes are currently being levied IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax) applicable on intra state i.e. national level and collected by the Central government, SGST (State Goods and Services Tax) applicable within the state limits and collected by State governments, CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) applicable within the state limits and collected by Central government.

SGST is levied by the State Govt. where the products are being sold or purchased within state. SGST has two components of taxes charged on every intra-state transaction. One of these is the component levied by the state government and second one is linked to CGST component. SGST replaces all the state taxes which were existing previously like VAT(value added tax), Entertainment tax, Service tax, Luxury tax, State sales tax, Entry tax, etc.

UTGST is levied only for five Union territory state- Chandigarh, Dadraand Nagar Haveli, Andaman Nicobar Island, Lakshadweep, Daman and Diu. These states levy additional tax component with break up including UTGST and additional CGST for all transactions of goods and services. Two Union Territory (Delhi, Puducherry) are free from additional charge for GST because of their own legislature.

In India, taxes are broadly defined into two categories direct and indirect. Direct taxes are the taxes that are liable to be paid directly by the individuals, HUFs (Hindu Undivided Families), commercial and corporate bodies etc. These taxes are therefore, paid directly to the government by the mentioned entities and include
income tax, corporation tax, wealth tax etc. In India, CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) function as the main body for the due regulation and transparency in the direct taxation system. The governing body for direct taxation in India is the CBDTCBDT itself is a functioning body that comes under the supervision and regulation of the Revenue Department of the Finance Ministry of the Government of India. Central Board of Revenue Act, 1963 served as the turning point for direct taxation in India and CBDT came into being. CBDT mandates the rules, regulations and any updates regarding the way collection of direct taxes in India is done. Al the working procedures of the Income Tax department segments and the concerned officials responsible for financial audits vis-a-vis direct tax recovery, defaults, tax-evasion etc. are laid into effect by CBDT, under the Finance Ministry.
