If you were to attend a Divine performance today, you'd never believe there was a time when Vivian Fernandes didn't know what hip-hop was. As a little boy, Vivian lived with his grandmother, who would play Konkani folk songs at home. Without cable or an internet connection at home, Vivian was hardly exposed to the outside world or music from other parts of India, let alone America. 

However, a friend's fashion choice changed his life forever. When a 14-year-old Vivian saw a schoolmate wearing a 50 Cent t-shirt, he was intrigued and asked about it. In response, his friend handed him a CD containing hundreds of hip-hop and rap songs. Fernandes was hooked. He spent all his free time either listening to the CD or researching hip-hop artists and music at cyber cafes. Once he completed his board exams, he expressed his interest to work as a sound engineer, but financial troubles kept him away from his dream. Luckily for us, his mother bought him a microphone - the gift that convinced him to become a rapper in his own right.

Today, Mumbai's Gully Boy gets paid a few lakhs for every show he does, but he hasn't forgotten the struggles he faced while growing up. When it comes to music, Divine is happy to freestyle his way through his performances, but is unwilling to do so with his finances. He's painfully aware of the fact that he needs to invest in his own music while also ensuring he saves enough for the future.
