The modern Indian working mom deserves more. Are you doing your bit?
The Indian woman is a breed apart. Groomed from childhood to become a caring, nurturing adult, she morphs into an eight armed goddess once she marries and raises a family - multitasking among various chores and duties of a busy household from dawn to dusk. And if she happens to hold a job outside the home, the domestic goddess simply takes that as well into her stride, without missing a beat.
This means the typical Indian working mom not only ensures that her household runs like clockwork, she also undertakes often arduous commutes to work and does sundry chores outside the home before returning home in the evenings in time to lay a piping hot dinner on the table and supervise the kids' homework before bedtime. The past few months however have turned her world upside down. She has been compelled to work from home, and she has a family that needs to be cared for all 24 hours, and of course, she has little recourse to any domestic help.
There's a mother in all our families right now, juggling work schedules with one hand while she manages to keep the kids occupied and fresh vegetables on the table at every meal. She's capable of dealing with the extra responsibilities thrown at her, but it won’t be such a bad idea to recoup and remember all that she is doing and try to bring a smile on her face.
Here are some ways you could do your bit as we continue to live in extraordinary times -
Share her load
Mothers are the de facto caretakers of the family, which means they not only cook all the special dishes you request, they also pick up your dirty laundry, look after the elderly persons in the family and make sure the pantry is well stocked in these difficult times. All this is done in between attending to her own office mails and calls, and finishing the day's official tasks. You can make a difference by offering to do the dishes and the laundry and the dusting around the house, so that she is left with more time to spare for her other chores. You could in fact even encourage others in the family to take up domestic chores on a rotation basis every week. Who knows, it could turn into a good lifetime habit!
Give her a special experience
Sure, you cannot move out of the house to treat her to a movie and dinner once in a while. But every once in a while, you can ask her to take the day off from kitchen duty and let her put her feet up. Start with a scrumptious breakfast for her and whip up her favourite dishes for lunch and dinner. This might need you to buy the essentials a little in advance if you are looking for exotic ingredients which may not be as easily available these days, but the result could be well worth it!
Give her a gift that keeps on giving
She may be the mother of your children, or your own working mom. Her birthday could be round the corner, or you may simply want to show her that you care. You could choose to invest in HDFC Life's varied insurance plans specially created to suit the needs of women at different stages of their life; such as protection, health, retirement, child’s education and long term savings and investments.
Plans like HDFC Life Sanchay Plus, gives wings to their aspirations, ensures her savings grow leaving her free to pursue a career and continue making a difference to those around her.
